HOW XOLAIR MAY WORK
HOW XOLAIR MAY WORK
IgE is an underlying cause of food allergy reactions.
Your body’s immune system reacts when you come in contact with materials called allergens, which are harmless substances that may trigger an allergic reaction in some people. Allergens could be common things like pollen, cat dander, and certain foods that can cause an immune overreaction in some people.
When an allergen in food is eaten by patients with IgE-mediated food allergies, the body responds by making a protein called IgE. IgE causes inflammation that leads to food allergy symptoms.
Histamine is released when IgE attaches to mast cells through IgE receptors. Mast cells are found in almost all tissues and drive food allergy reactions by releasing certain substances, especially histamine. Histamine can lead to vomiting, itching, hives, and other food allergy reactions.
By targeting IgE, XOLAIR helps limit the mast cell release of histamine that causes food allergy symptoms.
XOLAIR for food allergy is administered
once or twice a month as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous).
XOLAIR is the first FDA-approved treatment to reduce food allergy reactions, including severe reactions such as anaphylaxis.
XOLAIR should not be used for the emergency treatment of any allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.
XOLAIR is an injectable medication for
people 1 year of age and older who are
allergic to one or more foods.
